VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Asian American Election Protection and Poll Monitoring
Defending Asian American Voting Rights

-----------------

Trainings on Thursday, Oct. 16 and Friday, Oct. 17
At Boston Univ. Law, Suffolk Law, Northeastern Law
and Bingham McCutchen LLP, 1 Federal Street

In past elections, Asian Americans have faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote. For example, poll workers were hostile and made racist remarks, poll sites had too few interpreters to assist Asian American voters, translated voting materials were missing or hidden from voters, and ballots were mistranslated listing Democratic candidates as Republicans, and vice versa. When the news media reports on election returns and the vote by specific groups, Asian Americans were often overlooked.

In response, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund has conducted a non-partisan survey of Asian American voters to document Asian American voting patterns. AALDEF has also monitored the elections for compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act, which mandates bilingual ballots and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination.

On Election Day on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, several groups will be monitoring the Presidential Elections and conducting non-partisan voter surveys at polling sites in Eastern Massachusetts. We need your help.

In 2004 elections, 1,200 volunteers polled almost 11,000 Asian American voters in eight states. Volunteers are needed to administer a multilingual voter survey in 3-hour shifts and document voting problems on Election Day. Polls are generally open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

There will be a one and a half hour training session for all volunteers. All volunteers must be non-partisan during the time that they help. To sign up, go to www.aaldef.net and complete the registration form. Thank you!

The Muslim American Society (MAS) invites you to the new cultural center (ISBCC) at 100 Malcolm X Boulevard, Roxbury, MA for a free Career Fair and Town Hall Meeting!

Career Fair

Looking for an exciting career with excellent benefits where you can make an impact? Recruiters from several law enforcement agencies will be attending the Career Fair! The goal of the Career Fair is to increase diversity within law enforcement by hiring within the Muslim, Sikh and other minority communities. Representatives from the law enforcement agencies will be explaining what they do, what the positions are and how to apply. Don’t forget to bring your resume!

Agencies attending include FBI, TSA (Transportation and Security Administration), ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), CBP (Customs and Border Patrol), MA State Police, Boston Police and others!

Town Hall Meeting

Come attend a delicious free dinner while meeting with representatives from various law enforcement agencies, such as the US Attorney’s Office, FBI and Homeland Security! The goal of the Town Hall Meeting is to build stronger relationships between law enforcement and the Muslim community by (1) the law enforcement agencies explaining what they do and (2) to allow Muslims to raise concerns they may have. There will be a Question and Answer period where people can raise any tough questions they may have. Please email us your questions in advance!

Please RSVP for the Job Fair and/or Town Hall Meeting by emailing Maheen Junaid, MAS Civil and Legal Coordinator at maheen@masboston.org or calling 617-623-3004. We also need volunteers for both events so please let us know if you will be able to volunteer.
