Cocktail Reception Honoring Sunila Thomas-George and Navjeet K. Bal

The South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston was pleased to host a cocktail reception honoring newly appointed Commissioner Sunila Thomas -George of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and Commissioner Navjeet K. Bal of the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.

We held this reception to congratulate these two Commissioners on their new leadership positions in the Commonwealth, and to celebrate the accomplishments of South Asians in the Boston legal community. Brief remarks were given by each Commissioner, SABA GB President Samia Kirmani and SABA GB Treasurer and Event Organizer Natasha Varyani.

Mentor-Mentee Kickoff

On January 31, 2008, Boston area law students and practicing attorneys gathered together at the offices of Foley Hoag to kick-off the 2008-2009 SABA GB mentor/mentee program. The SABA mentor/mentee program is one of SABA's strongest programs and provides area law students with the opportunity to develop close relationships with more senior members of the bar. This is the fourth year of the SABA GB mentor/mentee program, and this year's program has the most number of "matches" to date! Participating law students and practicing attorney remain very enthusiastic about the mentoring program.

If you would like participate in the mentor/mentee program but were not able to attend the reception, please contact Shahzia Rahman or Lalitha Gunturi .

SABA GB makes every effort to accommodate mentor/mentee requests and tries to match law students with attorneys practicing in areas of particular interest to the students.

Annual Year-End Dinner

This year's dinner was not to be missed starting with Tantric's innovative Indian cuisine. United States District Court Judge Reginald Lindsay was the evening's key-note speaker, who delighted us with an effusive and inspirational speech on the path of his career and the battles and successes of minorities in the legal profession as a whole. In addition, Manisha Bhatt of Greater Boston Legal Services and the SABA Greater Boston Board was awarded both SABA GB's first Member of the Year and Board Member of the Year awards for her unsurpassed commitment to the community along with her invaluable dedication to the Board. We also announced the results of the 2008 election and attendees had the opportunity to meet the 2008 SABA GB Board. Finally, we had the pleasure of over fifty people in attendance including leadership from the BBA, MBA, MBLA, and WBA. We sincerely thank everyone who attended for their support of SABA Greater Boston.

The New Bedford Raids Panel

SABA Greater Boston members and friends learned about the ICE raids in Massachusetts and about volunteer opportunities for attorneys of all backgrounds. The panel discussion included what transpired during the raids, the attorneys' fight in the Court system, DSS' struggle to get involved, and how the media has played a role in all of these events. We will also learned about the impact the raids have had on the families of those detained and the impact future raids could have on the South Asian community. The panelists included:

  • Ali Noorani: Executive Director of the Massachusetts Immigration and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA)
  • Punam Singh Rogers: Immigration Attorney at Foley Hoag LLP, Executive Board Member of New England Chapter of American Immigration Lawyers Association
  • Hema Sarangpani: Staff attorney at the Immigration Unit of Greater Boston Legal Services

Guests learned to pair wines of the world with favorites in Indian cuisine with the guidance of Master Sommelier Alpana Singh, the youngest person to become a Master Sommelier. The wine tasting featured seven wines and five stations of Indian food.
