The South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston is proud to announce its Second Annual Legal Intern Fellowship Program. The Fellowship Program is intended to provide funding both for law students of South Asian descent working over the summer in otherwise unpaid legal positions at non-profit organizations as well as law students working in an unpaid legal internship focusing on the needs of the South Asian community.
We will be selecting up to two fellowship winners who will each receive a stipend of $4,000. Applications are due April 30, 2010.

In light of the Christmas incident, the TSA has implemented new security measures mandating that individuals flying into the United States from anywhere in the world who hold passports issued by or traveling from or through nations that are state sponsors of terrorism or other countries of interest be required to go through enhanced security screening. Panel speakers include Mr. Dennis Cronin, New England Regional Counsel for the TSA, who will provide information about what travelers may encounter at airports with respect to these and other new measures and Aloke Chakravarty, an Anti-Terrorism and National Security Attorney with experience in engaging with the Department of Homeland Security on transportation security issues from prosecutorial and community access perspectives.

On Friday, February 20, 2009, the South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston (“SABA GB”) held its 2009 Kickoff Event at the Taj Hotel in Boston. The evening was co-hosted by the Network of South Asian Professionals (“NetSAP-Boston”) and the Indian Medical Association of New England (“IMANE”), giving members of SABA GB, NetSAP-Boston and IMANE an occasion to network and mingle. Featuring the theme of Bollywood Nights, over 350 guests dined on Taj Chef Prabeen Prathapan’s Indian specialties and danced to the music of DJ Bunty. SABA GB, along with law firms and bar associations throughout the Commonwealth gathered for the 10th Annual "Walk to the Hill" for Civil Legal Aid at the Massachusetts State House Great Hall to support this critical effort to urge legislators to protect funding for civil legal aid. The organizations, in a show of solidarity, emphasized the urgent need to advocate for civil legal aid for low-income families and communities amidst these trying economic times.

On November 7-9th, SABA GB hosted the fifth annual leadership retreat for the North American South Asian Bar Association (NASABA). This was the first time that the leadership retreat was held in Boston. Leaders of South Asian bar associations throughout the country convened in Boston to attend the retreat. The event kicked off with a Welcome Reception featuring keynote speaker Grace Lee, First Deputy Treasurer and General Counsel to Timothy Cahill, the Treasurer of Massachusetts.

SABA GB launched its mentor-mentee Kickoff event with food, drinks and fun (the kind of fun that involved prizes) with a scavenger hunt that brought them to spots throughout Boston. The event allowed mentors and mentees to get to know each other better while working together to follow clues about landmarks throughout the City. The event was coordinated by co-chairs Shahzia Rahman and Lalitha Gunturi.

On August 29, 2008, SABA GB joined other affinity bar associations at Fenway Park to enjoy a summer evening and cheer on the World Champs! As part of their diversity initiative, the Red Sox offered a block of tickets to all affinity bar organizations for a game against the Chicago White Sox. The event allowed members of all the affinity bars (AALAM, MAHA, MBLA, MGLBA and SABA GB) to come together for a night of networking and fun!

SABA GB celebrated India Day and Pakistan Day in 2008 by helping the communities register to vote. SABA was represented at both events and distributed voter registration forms as well as information about the organization. The event offered an excellent way to meet community members in a casual environment and enjoy good food and new friends. We held this reception to congratulate these two Commissioners on their new leadership positions in the Commonwealth, and to celebrate the accomplishments of South Asians in the Boston legal community. On January 31, 2008, Boston area law students and practicing attorneys gathered together at the offices of Foley Hoag to kick-off the 2008-2009 SABA GB mentor/mentee program. The SABA mentor/mentee program is one of SABA's strongest programs and provides area law students with the opportunity to develop close relationships with more senior members of the bar. This is the fourth year of the SABA GB mentor/mentee program, and this year's program has the most number of "matches" to date! Participating law students and practicing attorney remain very enthusiastic about the mentoring program.
