Massachusetts Superior Court
LAW CLERK TO THE JUSTICES OF THE SUPERIOR COURT
The Justices of the Massachusetts Superior Court seek 54 law
clerks of outstanding ability to serve one-year terms from September
1, 2009 through August 31, 2010. There are 47 law clerk positions
in Eastern Massachusetts, based in Boston, and seven law clerk
positions in Western Massachusetts, based in Springfield. Among
other duties, law clerks prepare memoranda and write draft decisions
that may encompass any aspect of court procedure or substantive
civil or criminal law within the Superior Court's jurisdiction.
Law clerks have unmatched opportunities to observe courtroom
practice and direct access to the judges to discuss cases and
legal issues.
Excellent writing, communication, and accurate research skills
are absolutely necessary for the position, as are high professional
and ethical standards. All law clerks must have graduated law
school by the start of the clerkship and reside in Massachusetts
during the duration of the clerkship. Bar membership is not
a requirement. Because the Superior Court is a circuit court,
both judges and law clerks rotate, on average, every three months
to a different county courthouse. Accordingly, all law clerks
must have access to a reliable car and be willing and able to
drive to their assigned courthouses.
For full application instructions and additional details about
the clerkship, please see the 2009-10 Superior Court Law Clerk
Position Prospectus, available at the Massachusetts Superior
Court website or by browsing to the link below. Briefly, applicants
must submit (1) a cover letter, (2) a resume, (3) an official
law school transcript, (4) two writing samples (unedited by
others), (5) two letters of recommendation, and (6) a completed
Trial Court application (see link below). Please state in your
cover letter whether you wish to be considered for Eastern OR
Western Massachusetts (choose one only). Applications are currently
being accepted and must be received or postmarked by September
19, 2008.
Applications and inquiries should be directed to Linda
M. Layne (if your last name starts with A-L) or Romeo
G. Camba (if your last name starts with M-Z), Superior Court
Administrative Office, Suffolk Superior Court, 3 Pemberton Square,
13th Floor, Boston, MA 02108. They may be contacted by e-mail
at linda.layne@jud.state.ma.us
