Women and Minorities Under Islamic Law

Preeminent Islamic law scholars will explore
the rights and status of women and minorities under Islamic
law, an understanding of which is important to representation
in the family law, domestic violence, trusts and estate, and
other fields of legal practice.
Particular areas that may be addressed
include: :
- Marriage, divorce, inheritance, sexual relations, custody,
homosexuality
- How to separate what is seen as mandated by Islamic law
(Sharia), versus that mandated by culture?;
- How does the interpretation of specific laws vary in different
Islamic countries?

relationship building between law students, junior attorneys,

this program provides an opportunity for law students and young
attorneys to seek guidance as they pursue a career in the legal
profession.

Famed Chef Devanand (David) Chinta will be
cooking for us throughout the Convention Weekend including Indian
Snacks, a South Indian Breakfast on Saturday morning, and a
delectable North Indian dinner for the Saturday Evening Gala.
Having trained under two Michelin-starred chefs
in England and France, Chef Chinta brings high-end European
training along with Indian culinary experience to his new position
as the Chef de Cuisine at the Boston InterContinental's Four
Diamond Miel "Brasserie Provençale." Chef Chinta,
who hails from Hyderabad, India, trained at the Institute of
Hotel Management and Catering Technology in New Delhi, India
and the Oberoi Hotel in Hyderabad. He continued his training
at the Les Quatre Saisons Hôtel, a boutique hotel in Paris,
France, as Premier de Commis.

South Asian Art Tour
NASABA has also arranged for a private tour
of the South Asian Collection at the Museum
of Fine Arts in Boston ($20/person). On view in the Asian
paper conservation lab will be a temporary exhibition created
specifically for NASABA. Laura Weinstein, Assistant Curator
of South Asian Art, will present the first part of the exhibit,
which will include a selection of masterpieces of South Asian
painting. The second part will include a group of paintings
in various stages of completion chosen to illustrate the methods
and materials these artists used. Joan Wright, Bettina Burr
Conservator, will be on hand to talk about how South Asian paintings
were made and how they are conserved. As a special treat, visitors
will have a chance to look through our high-powered microscope
at a painting to see what the surface looks like magnified fifty
times.

Preeminent South Asian attorneys will argue
a 1923 civil rights case that Made History. In Thind, the Supreme
Court deemed South Asians ineligible for citizenship because
U.S. law allowed only free whites to become naturalized citizens.
Judges Thapar,
Gandhi
and Woodlock
will hear arguments and provide insight into the judicial deliberative
process. Judges Thapar and Gandhi are the first South Asian
federal Article III judges in the United States.
